Thesuite of safety and driver assist technologies will debut at the New YorkInternational Auto Show on 2013 Legacy and Outback models. EyeSight willsubsequently appear on other products in the Subaru line-up. EyeSightintegrates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and vehicle lanedeparture warning. The new technology, which can also detect obstacles in frontof a parked car and limit potential damage in an impact, will become availablelater this year.

Combining safety and convenience features, the Subaru EyeSight system willbe one of the most affordable of such technologies available in the UnitedStates market. EyeSight uses two charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras developedby Subaru. EyeSight is mounted inside the car on the upper edge of thewindshield, thus reducing the potential for damage that could occur inbumper-mounted systems, such as radar. The EyeSight system processes stereoimages to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles,traffic lanes and other items. The video information is relayed to the EyeSightcomputer, which is also networked with the car's braking system and electronicthrottle control. Below speeds of approximately 19mph, EyeSight is capable ofdetecting pedestrians in the vehicle's path and can activate in order tomitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight isable to bring the car to a complete stop, thus avoiding a collision.
Pre-Collision Braking Control and Collision Mitigation
At relative speeds under approximately 19 mph, EyeSight's Pre-CollisionBraking System can detect obstacles in the car's path and, if the driver hasnot applied the brakes in time, the system can do so to slow the vehicle orbring it to a full stop to help avoid the potential collision. Pre-CollisionBraking is always on in the background to act like a second set of eyes for thedriver. It can also be turned off temporarily for off-road or rough road travel.
At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakeswhen an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes noevasive action, or does not brake appropriately. In this way it will mitigatepotential damage from a collision. The system, which can recognize programmedobjects such as vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, can helpmitigate collision damage.
Lane Departure and Sway Warning
By monitoring traffic lane markers and lines, the Subaru EyeSight system candetect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turnsignal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Usingthe turn signal cancels the warning.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Intended for freeway use, Eyesight's Adaptive Cruise Control system canmaintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or acceleratingthe car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and travelingdistance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fullybrake the vehicle to a stop if the system "locks on" to a vehicleahead.
As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy"stop and go" freeway traffic by maintaining distance from thevehicle ahead. This feature can help reduce driver fatigue, which can thereforehelp keep the driver alert.
Additional EyeSight Benefits
In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when thevehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn't react within severalseconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damages by cuttingthe throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedalcontinues to be pushed. The system is also effective when a driver shifts into'Drive' inadvertently instead of 'Reverse' when backing out of a parking space.The stereo camera design of EyeSight provides a detection angle wider than thatof radar-based systems.
Cautions
EyeSight is not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to theroad. The system may not react in every situation. There are certainoperational limitations, such as when weather conditions obscure the view ofthe cameras. Finally, even with the advanced technology used, a driver withgood vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system.

Detroit’s Big Three may be making strides, but they have a long way to go to catch their foreign counterparts, according to Consumer Reports.
The magazine’s annual auto issue ranked Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC at, or near, the bottom of its “Top Picks” automaker report card.
Subaru Motor Co. ranked No. 1 with a score of 75, followed by four Japanese automakers — Mazda Motor Corp. at 74, Toyota Motor Corp. at 73, Honda Motor Co. at 72 and Nissan Motor Co. at 67.
Ford fell five spots from last year to 10th with an overall score of 60, GM ranked 12th with a 56 and Chrysler came in last with a 51; but it's not all bad.
“Although Chrysler remains in last place, its overall score jumped eight points, making it the second most improved automaker,” according to Consumer Reports. “Chrysler’s average road-test score also increased by eight points, the most of any automaker, and its overall reliability improved to average. The turnaround can be credited mostly to Chrysler’s extensively freshened and redesigned vehicles.”
Consumer Reports evaluates each automaker on its vehicle lineup based on an overall score from an automaker's average road-test and predicted-reliability scores. Nearly 300 vehicles were involved in testing.
The magazine recommended 10 of 25 GM models tested, eight of 15 Ford cars and trucks, and three of 15 Chrysler models (Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and Dodge Challenger) received buy recommendations.
Ford, which fell the furthest of any automaker, was ranked poorly due to reliability and concerns about its MyFord Touch infotainment system.
In October, the Dearborn-based automaker saw its Consumer Reports reliability rating plummet due to the MyFord Touch infotainment system and the new automated-manual transmission used in the Fiesta and Focus.
The Chevrolet Avalanche and the Ford Mustang were the only U.S. vehicles among the top 10 models this year, according to the magazine.
Toyota won five out of the top 10 spots in Consumer Reports' Top Picks for 2011:

Salem, MO Feb. 24, 2012 – Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver and defending Rally America National Champion David Higgins is full of confidence ahead of this weekend’s Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, round two of the 2012 Rally America National Championship, after completing two days of gravel testing this week at the wheel of his #75 Subaru WRX STI. Higgins, from the Isle of Man, is ready to battle nearly 70 top rally teams on over 100 miles of fast yet technical gravel roads that twist through central Missouri’s majestic Ozark foothills.

After an impressive victory last month in the snow and ice at the opening round of the Rally America series, the Sno*Drift rally, Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew will be going for the win in Missouri this weekend to further extend their championship points lead. The two-day Rally in the 100 Acre Wood is based in Salem, Missouri and the competitive stages will take place Feb. 24-25.

“The feeling with our Subaru is very good,” explained Higgins. “During testing this week we made some great progress and found some speed on the faster sections, which will be crucial at this event. Subaru BRZ Concept – STI to Debut

Subaru of America, Inc. announced today that it will show an all-new concept version of its upcoming BRZ sports car at the 2011 Los Angeles International Auto Show. Dubbed the Subaru BRZ Concept – STI, the concept car represents the next step in lightweight performance sports cars combined with the race-bred tuning of Subaru Technica International (STI).
We’ve seen camo’d spy photos, but this is the first time the BRZ has appeared in bare sheetmetal. The Concept – STI strongly hints at the styling of the production BRZ and features unique STI performance.
A hexagonal front grille, hawk eye headlights and fin-shaped fog lamps are instantly recognizable as Subaru, while the body is set-off with aero-tuned lower front spoiler and unique rear fascia, a rear wing for added down-force, and a carbon-fiber roof to lower its center of gravity. The rear design features bold rear fender flares and large rear-diffuser giving way to polished stainless-steel quad-tailpipes. Vented rear bumper corners contribute to improved aerodynamics performance.
The concept car is powered by the new Subaru 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder “FA” Boxer engine designed exclusively for the RWD BRZ sports car. The overall structure has been designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm. The inherent qualities of the Subaru Boxer engine were mated to a direct injection fuel system, which further improves combustion efficiency, running smoothness up to high rpm and high environmental standards.

The lightened Concept – STI features an STI-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes and unique 18-inch wheels and tires. The Subaru-engineered and built chassis boasts a rigid frame housing a two-plus-two interior and front engine/rear-wheel drive layout. TOKYO — Subaru plans to launch four new models over the next five years, including the Toyobaru sport coupe next spring, followed by a hybrid in 2013 that could be based on the 2009 Hybrid Tourer concept.

The new models are a key element of a new five-year business plan, called Motion-V, announced Wednesday by Subaru’s corporate parent, Fuji Heavy Industries.

The Motion-V plan also calls for Subaru to boost global sales from a projected 633,000 cars during the current fiscal year to 900,000 by 2016. Much of that growth will come from the U.S. and China, which Subaru will begin local production shortly, possibly in a joint venture
with Chinese automaker Chery.

Subaru also said it plans to boost fuel economy across the board by an average 30 percent. In addition, it wants to “become the world’s leading brand in safety performance by providing all-around safety that comprises risk-avoidance technologies (active safety), systems in
collision safety (passive safety), and pre-crash safety features.”

Among those features is the company’s EyeSight active driving assist system that uses stereo camera technology.

CHERRY HILL, N.J., June 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America Inc. announced a multi-year sponsorship agreement of the Isle of Man TT Races and will run a U.S. specification Subaru WRX STI on several timed laps of the famous TT motorcycle course. The previous timed lap for a car was run 21 years ago by legendary motorsport racer Tony Pond who completed the course at an average speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h).

The course is the perfect test for the Symmetrical AWD confidence and control of the turbocharged, 305-horsepower Subaru WRX STI. Known primarily as a motorcycle circuit, the iconic Mountain Course is known to be one of the harshest tests of man and machine. For more than 100 years, the Isle of Man has been home to the TT Races and is notable not only for its 37 3/4 mile length, but also for the average speed of the motorcycle racers who compete through the island's narrow roads and small towns at speeds averaging over 130 mph.

Rally driver Mark Higgins will drive a standard Subaru WRX STI on the closed course run of the Snaefell Mountain Course. Manx born and raised, the former British Rally Champion and World Rally stage winner has dreamed of driving the course for years. As part of the Subaru TT Challenge, Higgins will look to set the fastest time for a 4-cylinder production engine vehicle. A timed lap of the closed course was last run in 1990.

"I'm really excited at the opportunity," said Higgins. "I know it will be hard work, but it's a great challenge and I'm really looking forward to it."

As a former test driver for Subaru, he has a long association with the factory. Mark Higgins' brother David currently drives for the Subaru Rally Team USA.

For the timed lap, Higgins will drive a US-spec Subaru WRX STI with minor safety modifications. The WRX STI will feature a roll cage, race seats and harnesses, uprated brake pads and will run Pirelli racing tires. A louder exhaust has also been specified to alert fans to the on-coming car.

Here's news for you in the bad-winter belt who love all-wheel drive, but hate the penalty at the gas pump: Subaru announced today that its coming, redesigned 2012 Impreza will deliver 36 miles per gallon on the highway.

That, Subaru boasts, will be the best fuel economy for any all-wheel-drive car you can buy in the U.S.

Not bad for a two-wheeler either -- equal or within a mile or two of virtually all of the new designs in the hot compact sedan segment this year, at least in standard trim. Only the Hyundai Elantra hits 40 in base trim and neither the new Elantra nor the red0ne Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Chevy Cruze, recently refreshed Mazda3 nor aging but big-selling Toyota Corolla offers an all-wheel version

The new Impreza will continue to have four-door and five-door models and a Boxer engine. It will make its world debut at the New York Auto Show April 20, but Subie also released a photo today. It appears to be slightly larger and Subaru promises a roomier interior.

The production model is a toned down but close version of the good-looking Impreza Design Concept that Subaru unveiled last fall at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept showcased the company's new Confidence in Motion design language. It's a distinctive look, befitting Subaru, but more cool than quirky.

With msnbc.com saying "The Japanese brand is best known for having all-wheel-drive standard on all of its vehicles. The Subaru Outback is ubiquitous in Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire and Oregon — states that experience regular snow, lots of spring mud and rain. But Subaru also limits its sales rebates and other incentives, which means that owners are able to sell their vehicles for the biggest percentage of the original purchase price of any brand. Consumer Reports says Subaru makes the best vehicles overall

Subaru got a score of 73 by the Consumer Reports teams which was the second highest for 2011, right behind Honda's 74. The Consumer Reports report card is based on tests of more than 270 models. Each automaker's overall score is based on a composite of road-test and predicted-reliability scores for all its tested models.
